This set was produced to introduce an more comprehensive set for these classes.
The H31 class was designed and created in 1942 as a replacement for the aging GLa and GLc/GLca hopper fleet. From
March to June 1942, the original H31 class was built, comprising of 711 cars. From June to July 1942, 500 H31b composite
side cars were built. In 1949, the first H31c was created, which was an H31b that had its wood side panels replaced with
steel. After the initial H31c rebuild, no additional cars being rebuilt until January 1951. By 1957, a maximum of 482 H31c’s
had been created. 632 H31 class cars did last into 1968 and the PC merger.
The H31 classes were in single number blocks. The H31 was 220301-220841 and 222501-222670, H31b 220842-221341,
the H31c cars matched those of the H31b, since they were rebuilds of that class. The first H31c, rebuilt in 1949 was 220968.
This sheet has enough data to do 5 cars, 2 H31, 2 H31b and 1 H31c, although the H31b numbers could be used as H31c
numbers as well. There are six different reweigh/repack dates cover locations system wide and multiple re-weigh dates ranging
from the mid-1940’s through to the late 1950’s.
The H31 has been done by Athearn, the H31b by Accurail, and the H31c has been imported in brass by Overland.
